i am not sure if i am getting spark on my cx500 1978

my mc will not start - bike only ran a couple times for last 2 years and has 14000 miles

i cannot get to start, not sure if it is an electrical prob or gas problem (yes i do have gas in the tank)

how difficult is it to clean carb?

how about the black cylinder that the spark plug cable come out of or the silver box that the wires go into, both under the seat?

where can i find the distributor cap and points on the cx500 1976

i tried starting, not sure if it is an electrical prob or gas problem (yes i do have gas in the tank)

There were no cx's made until 1978. They have no points or distributor cap.

Try removing a spark plug, then attach it to the spark plug boot and hold the tang of the plug against the triangular engine bracket in front of the carbs while rolling the engine over with the starter. Look for a spark.

Let us know if you have spark. This will give us some idea what to test next.

Also a little background info would help,,when was the bike last running, etc.
It took me ten minutes to clean the spewed coffee off of my laptop keyboard.

+1 to Allans' comment though. Please take a moment to fill out your profile with your location and bike model. It can't be a '76,
My guess as well, but a bit hard to mistake the two bikes, not much similar there.

my error, it is a 1978 cx500 and it does not have a distribtor cap, i took plug out and turned over engine, no spark, but i did not place near the wye behind the carb

i will try that next

thanks

i ran it for one day in 2010 and mabe a couple in 2009, only 14,000 miles
You cannot check for spark by grounding to the valve covers, they're insulated by the rubber gaskets.

Go to the quick reference post for links to useful information. In that same post, at the bottom in blindstich's sig line, you will find a link to downloadable documents, including the factory service manual.
