I recently had the pleasure of dealing with Gary at CUSTOM REWIND for a stator for my '79. At his instruction, I simply unbolted and sent him the stator with pulsars, neutral wire, and plugs attached. He sent me back the complete assembly - stator, pulsars, plugs, and all. Replacement was a simple bolt-in.

While not cheapest, the service was strong and the process could not have been simpler. Thanks, Gary.

Even a good small motor rewinding shop can handle rewinding a stator but they rarely have the far smaller wire necessary for the HV windings on a CDI one. No big deal though, if you can find a shop that's willing to tackle the project they can measure the wire for AWG with a micrometer and there are some eBay sellers that sell almost every gauge of magnet wire imaginable at far more reasonable pricing than from the normal mail order places.

In my electronics work there are times I need to wind my own coils for RF circuits but I'm usually just using #20 or #26.

If I ever lose mine I *may* try to rewind the HV winding myself but going with an Ignitech seems like a more plausible solution, besides that I can later put on the higher amperage stator and have more power for lighting.

Anyone ever have a problem keeping the stock rectifier/regulator on when retrofitting the larger stator?

AFAIK they are the same RR on the CX/CL500s and the GL1100s and have plenty of current carrying capacity.Around 40 amps methinks. The output of the CDI 3 phase Stators is around 14 amps and the none CDI 3 phase stators is around 20amps so well within limits so long as the unit is functioning correctly and has good grounding and heat dissipation/Air-flow around them.

I copied the list and thought I'd post it up here too....Thanks.

Stator Rewinding

If and when the need arises in the future to have a stator replaced, my plans are to have a Honda stator rewound by a competent and reputable company specializing in rewinding stators. Several such sources are listed below.

Custom Rewind

Custom Rewind in Birmingham, Alabama has earned an excellent reputation among CX/GL owners for their high quality work in rewinding stators. I've heard nothing but praise for their work.

Their website appears to be new but they have been in business for quite a while. The preferred method of communication with them is by phone at 205-798-7282 or toll free at 800-798-7282.

Their mailing address is:
