So far I have found out members prefer the ball honing tool, but what grit and what size do I need to get?

Thanks.

Hi
Yes a ball hone is the better choice
For do it your self at home in the living room or some call it the garage. For me i spend more time in the garage so I call it the living room
How ever ball hone will give you the best finish and for the hone grit
I have a couple sizes and they are all 240 grit. Gives a good finish and works well for me
Remember you are only de glaceing the cylinder

you will see some people use engine oil ....NOT A GOOD CHOICE
Mix Varsol and ATF like dextron3.I do a 50/50 mix works good and use lots of it
This will help wash down the cylinder and keep the hone stones lubed when honing
You will need help to squirt the varsol mix in when you are honing the cylinder
Lot's of lube works the best
Speed on the drill is slow 600 rpm and you will beep in mind that the cross hatch need to be around 15 to 30 deg so its very important to move the drill right
Also when done the hone gets pulled out at same speed as you are honing the cylinder
good luck

I've only honed one engine, an inline4, but yes the ball hone was a good choice and I used hone lube oil made for the purpose. Watch videos and read up on proper technique. It is similar to lapping valve seats in that you can ruin it if you are too aggressive.
