The clutch switch supplies an alternative ground

to the soleniod so you can start the bike in gear.

Otherwise, the solenoid is grounded by the neutral switch

in the neutral position.

Thanks for asking that Mike

You helped me out.

I've been working on an electronics project related to the

starter circuit and got stuck at the last fence.

your question nudged my brain back into gear and

I realised I hadnt fully considered what was going on in there

DOH!!

I cant believe I'd overlooked that, most embarrasing.

Anyway

After I stop kicking myself in the ass I can move on

and finish it.

The logic is either the bike has to be in neutral &/or the clutch needs to be pulled in for the starter to operate.

If you notice, both circuits (neutral switch and clutch switch) meet at the diode in the fuse box. That ends up putting them in parallel as far as grounding the starter solenoid, and allows them to activate independently.
