1982 gl500i. I want to remove the chrome on some of my bike parts and have them powder coated or re-chromed. How do I remove the chrome outside of grinding it off? I know if I have them re-chromed they will remove the old chrome, but there is some rust and pits in the metal I would like to remove.

Ev.

sand blasting with a rough alum oxide has worked well for me. or if you have access to some muriatic acid ive been told that works better.

if you don't have either of those just sand it off but if you grind it will turn out aweful

Your Chromer should be able to electro-strip chrome without damaging the metal underneath. It's the opposite of electroplating... I would ask thm before using abrasives or just chemicals. There have also been discussions here about electrostripping rust from inside gas tanks...
