Hey all, I know it's probably a bad idea since it'll mess with the airflow and lean out the mixture but I have my heart set on fitting pods. The internet appears to have a huge amount of information on this subject and most of it is contradictory. What I'm after is someone to give me, plain and simple, the best way to fit pod filters to my CX500. Best of all would be if someone could link the specific parts they're talking about like the particular filters or any jets if necessary. Thanks in advance.
There's an abudance of information out there and especially on this forum. A little research will yield all the results that you need. First pick up the pods. Most perfer K&N item 2340 I think. Emgo makes a cheaper pod which I've also used for a number of years. The diameter of the pod you need to by is 54mm. I've used 52mm as well, but they're pretty tight and tend to come off when tightening. You'll also need to rejet your carbs. Most people who make the change from stock to pod filter go with 90/120 jets. Both of these will be MAIN jets. Install them and tune your carbs according to performance and check your spark plugs to find out if you're running too rich or too lean. Thats pretty much the whole of it. Are you still using H-Box with stock mufflers?
See the WIKI for pod install. There are modifications you will need to make to the ports on the carb are open.
Otherwise, pods have a tendency to block a few ports that are critical to performance.
Siddhartha (I read that book last summer):
I am planning to use K&N pods and I see that you asked the guy who posted the question if he was going to stay with stock exhaust pipes including the collector. I am not planning to. How will that affect things?
Also, I've noticed that exhaust pipes often cross in an "X" when custom made. Do you know why? I've seen it on hot rod builds and bikes.
Shane, what did you end up doing? I'm in the same boat. I have a good carb guy that told me how to step up the jets, but I haven't done anything yet...I'm still finishing up the gas tank so I can't tune them yet anyway. Did you modify your jets? Did you find the correct K&N pods?
