I'm thinking a metal milk crate would be best, because although the bottoms of those plastic milk crates are fairly firm and even a full-figured guy like me has no qualms about standing on one turned upside down, the side pressure from her leaning against it would give me cause for concern. But, then again, she's 12, and skinny to boot? How much back pressure could she put on it anyhow? Might wanna do a "shake-down" with the wifey on back and see what she says.

Those pipe insulators sound like a good idea also. Might want to get enough to put on the side bars of the slider for her legs.

Might need to stop every so often to check on how she's taking to it. Is she going to be able to wrap her hands around you AND that backrest? The more I keep thinking about "where's she going to put her hands", the more I think of losing the backrest and make her put her hands around you. That way there's no worry about side pressure on the milk crate, and you could have her push against you for back support.

Any way you decide to do it, I'm sure you will more and likely be trying several different arrangements.

Unless you have made up your mind on going BIGGER, I would try some "high-way" pegs on that old girl and see if THAT would give you a little different perspective. Anbd, it wouldn't cost ya all that much. Certainly cheaper than another bike.......
