I am onto the front brakes now after rebuilding the front forks, repacking the headset, and was diving into the reservoir and brake lever. Good thing becuase the reservoir was a gelatinous pile of ooze...



I didnt see a straight forward way to pull or remove the piston located in the lever block--I didnt want to damage the boot, what is the best way to get that out? should I take it out? I can't tell if its leaking at all. The boot looked dry. Since I am getting into it, what is the best course of action?

It's usually held in by a Cir-clip and you need a specialist type of long nosed Cir-clip pliers usually.

Be warned.These are old MCs and once disturbed can be rendered useless.I would clean thoroughly and not strip it and see if it works OK.Use the search function for cleaning the small hole in the bottom.



If it screws up get a new MC.Some one recently posted that these cheap ones work well,

I was in the same position of rebuilding or replacing my master cylinder last spring. After a fair amount of research on the old site and a lot of searching for parts I decided, that for just a little more than the cost of a rebuild kit i could get a whole new master cylinder ($49.99).



This is the exact one I bought from the same seller.

It is a good solid assembly, it looks nice and had worked flawlessly.

I am glad I didnt push to pull it and just let it be. I will look to see about cleaning the ports, and just leave it for now, and see what happens. I was surprised at the amount of Gelatin in the reservoir...there is no question in my mind at this point with regards to rebuiding or at least cleaning and inspecting the caliper, lines etc. I had like 2 tablespoons worth of scum!



I plan to pick up a can or two of brake cleaner, and just flush everything, put it back together, fill it, bleed it, and try it out.

My 2 cents.....You're asking for trouble if you do not take the piston out and clean the entire assembly.

It's not that hard to do.

Might try to do this... Rebuilt the Caliper this morning;



Does anyone have any pics posted of the Master Cylinder bits? I would like to know what I am getting into! and I can't see a way to get the dust boot off other than just pulling it. Thanks!

I am still hestiant to pull it apart and think I will gravitate towards the if it aint broke dont fix it mentality. All else is cleaned and rebuilt...

Well as a follow-up, I opted NOT to pull the master cylinder piston, filled and bled em down yesterday and they pumped up fast with a great feel to them. Front Brakes--DONE! Onto the coolant, coolant flushing, coolant system checks...thanks for the advice guys!

Glad to hear things are working out for you. I had jelly in my m/c when I first got it, isn't it incredible that brake fluid could turn into jello like that?

I was definitely shocked! it was pretty nasty. I made sure to clean out the caliper as well and also check on the seals...the caliper had that gelatinous goup in it as well...I am glad I diasssembled.



to get the piston out, I used about 5 to 10 psi and blew into the bleeder port...well 5 to 10 psi is a lot when you consider the surface area of the piston--YOW. caught my fingers a bit...be very careful! the trigger on the blow nozzle is sensitive...and it was a very sudden 5-psi!
