Hi Everyone,

I have been directed to this forum via Shep from his globalcxvtwins website.

A few months ago I managed to get hold of an old CX500 in pieces, with dreams of it becoming a cafe racer
So far I have learnt a LOT about motorbikes. I didn't know anything to begin with (mechanically or electrically)... I have made a lot of mistakes believe me! The stage I am up to is I have the motor running, but the carbs leak fuel out to where the airbox would normally be - so that's my current task. I don't think I have the hoses plugged in correctly and am struggling to find a hose diagram! I have completed some custom wiring f after finding the correct wiring diagram (I was using a 78 diagram which is WAY different because of the CDI), and figuring out why I had a CDI component when the bike doesn't need one
I have blown up the main fuse, and caused a mini chernobyl on the reg-rectifier cables by letting the cables touch. I have attached the - and + cables around the wrong way... you name it, I've probably done it. I am very embarrassed of course, but learning a lot.

Without further ado, here are the pics:

If you can reach the facebook page, you will also see my lovely CL400 here in working order!

If it is preferable to post the pics straight here I can go about doing this, it will take time though to move from facebook to here.

Cheers

Ben

Have taken the carbs apart. Photos here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=244786&id=854184241&l=3d4d2f91fc

I have now taken all the rubber/plastic parts off and soaked in white vinegar according to Sheps quick clean guide. Air blasted, and cleaned with brake cleaner.

Something strange I noticed, in one of the carbs there appears to be an extra brass bit down the bottom that narrows the pathway for the fuel. I think it's the emulsion tube, it's the one you use the spanner/wrench to get off. The extra little brass bit is down the end right next to the piston... the carb on the other side doesn't have this piece. Uh-oh.

any updates on your build ben?

Not yet lucky, carbs need reassembling is the next stage. After I've done this I'll give it the motor another run out of the frame and see if it still leaks fuel, might need new carbs if that's the case. I am very tempted to polish as per LRCXed's guide ... but I gotta hold off and make sure the carb works before making it preeetty!

I am fixing a worn-out disc brake on the CL400 at the moment, need that done as she's my main cruiser!

did you find the missing piece?

Are you talking about the little seat that goes down under the main jet emulsion tube?

No didn't find it

I think it is the seat. It's still missing ... I don't think it's ever been in there. Do I need it?
If it is the seat, then yes... It provides the taper for the needle to mate with. If you can't find one, I have a spare set of '79 carbs that have them.

Oh no!
Then I will need it... it is possible it popped out when I was cleaning them, I'll have a further look. The other one looks to be very firmly in place, as when I sprayed the airgun down the hole it didn't move. I wonder why the other one was so loose (or if it was indeed even in there to begin with!).

Awesome, thanks for the offer!! I'll let you know how I go, don't want to put you to too much trouble. Cheers Toehead
