I'm replacing the stator in my 1982 GL500 Interstate. How can I tell if the rotor needs to be replaced, too? It doesn't look like there's much to go wrong with it. If I inspect it and find no visible signs of damage, can I safely assume that it's okay?

If you mean the Starter Clutch Flywheel which also contains the magnets for the charging system then in the 500s they are quite robust as they don't seem to suffer from as much impact as the 650s.As per above just give a good visual check.

Make sure the screws in the sides are fully secure/torqued and that the springs and roller system inside are moving freely and have no scores and are fully cleaned and any and all swarf/metal particles have been cleaned off and removed.

Yes, as Grand says, check those screws on the side. I had one come loose and cause the most awful sound. And, I ended up replacing it.
