Hello My Name is Jay New to this Forum, Thanks to whom started it. First off I live in Pennsylvania, Mechanicsburg to be correct, Just bought this 80' honda cx500 everything seems good thinking carbs needs rebuilt had a water leak from the pee hole for water pump fixed that for the moment with some stop leak till i have the money and time over winter to tear her down but the carbs may be an issue saw a few topics on it but not sure anyone in my area or on here that can give me some help blessings to all

First off hello and welcome to the forum.

Secondly and most important. you have now ensured that you need to pull the engine and replace the water pump mechanical and oil seal. By using the stop leak you have blocked the outlet for the leaking pump seal and it will be pushing the water past the oils seal and into the engine. Next you will see the milky oil in the engine. Get that fixed right away.



As for the carbs it's just a matter of pulling them apart and doing a proper cleaning. They are probably plugged up with gummed up old gas that has them running rich. It's a must with a bike that's sat for a long time.

LRCXed, thanks for the welcome, ok this sucks! thought i was doing a favor to myself by the stop leak pellets, bummer. i just needed to buy some time for a few weeks till money came in. Been loving riding again been a few yrs. yes found carb rebuild kits 24.00 each side can't remember site have it book marked. Now for the mechanical seal from what i am told is what is leaking i put about 200 miles on the bike in the last week or so and no over heating how hard is this to do? do i have to remove engine from bike? Honda says it is a 6hr job about 200 for the parts so if i went that route i would be spending around 900.00 so doing it myself is next up. i work on all my own vehicles so i say a bike is just smaller and hopefully easier lol thanks what kinda bike do you have and what have you done to it.

Shep that sounds awesome,thanks for the link having hard time finding manual for this bike. found the seal at yamaha 25.00 compared to almost 70 at Honda so sounds like a go would i have to pull the motor or just take back end apart. thanks for the info Shep.all the other parts gaskets and seals are around 60$ so cheap enough just not sure about taking her apart. many thanks.

For the in-bike mech seal you just remove the carbs and take the Water pump cover off.Pretty easy once you get conversant with the bike/engine.

Thanks Shep, you ROCK!!!! seems like i just remove inlet tube, and rear cover don't seem to be as much work as the Honda dealer said it would be...now should i flush the motor and remove the stop leak i put in there Duh should of of done that,but then i will replace with fresh anti freeze. will examing the details and this leak and carb cleaning sounds like this bike should run awesome gonna check the timing chain while cover is off and adjust as needed bike only has 30,000 miles on it so she just getting broken in after 30 yrs lol. oh i should probabally make sure the rockers are adjusted also thanks again Shep. online manual should help till i buy a manual

Shep thanks for the info, when i pull the rear cover off do i need to drop the rear of the engine done some, and while in there will i be able to access the timing chain to adjust it if necessary. just got home from work a while ago and have not looked at that online manual yet but you seem to know alot about this so i figured i would ask. Hitting the bed hopefully i am tired. thanks for the help
