I took the start button out of the right hand control assembly to check on it. It was pretty gunky. I cleaned it up , but then I small plastic piece popped out and I can't find it anywhere .

I wonder if there is a way to use it with out or fabricate something in place of it.

It was like a covering that sat under the copper points. Anyone familiar with this?

Here's some pics from when I disassembled and cleaned the starter button assembly off my '81 GL500:

I think you are probably referring to what I call an insulator in the pictures. If that's what you are talking it looks like you will need it for the button to function properly.
Yep, thats it . I ordered another full control assembly just to get a new one. it will be here
a few days.
