History update All of the west coast to Ft Ross in Sonoma was Russia. Note Russian River in California was the dividing line between New Spain. Until Recently it was Russia longer than part of US. That s why it has the name.
You are exempt from knowing geography if you are US citizen but it doesn't change it.
