My name is Kobus Buytendag from South Africa, just bought myself a 1981 Silverwing.

This bike has been standing for two years, i cleaned out the carbs bought a new battery put new oil in, and it fired up immediately. When i drained the oil i smelled some gas in the oil and need to know if this will cause me some problems later on.Do i need to do anything else before i take her on the road.Any comments would be appreciated.

They can vary a little.I have a 19mm Long reach that fits my Wrench and plugs but others use an 18mm.The actual plugs are 12mm.

You can get a proper plug spanner/wrench,

or

Very cheap

I keep one like this chopped down a bit in my small under-seat tool box with a bar to use it that I made one end into a flat blade to use as a spare screwdriver

Hi Guys

Thank's a lot for all the reply's with my bike so far. She is purring like a kitten and i can't wait to take her down Long Tom pass tomorrow morning. One last question for now, can i use 10W40 full synthetic oil, or do i have to use mineral oil. I plan to go for 200km on w40 mineral oil and then want to do a full service.

I have heard many times that synthetic oil is not so good for these bikes. The recommendation is 15W-40 non-synthetic. The synthetics can make the clutch, which is bathed in oil slip. I think most here use Shell Rotella-T.

Good luck with the bike. I also am on a 81 GL500 Silverwing daily. Rides like a cloud! Thoroughly enjoy mine.

Just came back from my first ride on the wing, amazing handling for such a bike. At 70 mph the revs where 6000 rpm, is this normal for the bike? the heat guage never went over the first thin line on the guage, and i went up a 40km very steep mountain pass. I think she is ready now for some major traveling.

That RPM vs. speed is pretty close to normal. Many small differences have been noted amongst individual gauges, but nothing too out of the ordinary. Congrats on the ride, and yes, stick with regular dino oil. Some here have been using synthetics, and say they work okay, but I think the preponderance of the evidence says it is not worth the money for this machine. +1 on the Shell Rotella-T, it's designed for diesel engines, and carries a higher level of zinc, which is really helpful for our motors. Steer clear of any "energy conserving" types of any oil. Not just because of the clutch, but also many of the internal coatings could be harmed over time.
