The general rule is that in fifth gear, a CX500 will go 11 MPH per 1000 RPM. So, yours is exactly right on. And you can run them at that RPM or much higher until you run out of gas. Then refill the gas tank and ride some more. These bikes like high RPM's.

I too would love this bike to have a much taller final gear. This is the first bike I've had that easily can start out in 2nd gear. Don't jump on my back it was a 'I wonder if it will moment' -did it once shook my head and laughed. I guess the regular high rpm has much to do with our early (IMO) cam-chain demise.

goin fast is fun but it can be really stupid at times also

yeah I like my insurance rates now that I don't speed as much.....

In the car, my driving varies and it all depends on if it's just me in the vehicle, or if there is someone else too, if the baby is in the car with me, I drive overly cautious and shoot dirty looks at people who 'lane wander' and get too close to my car- if I'm hit while that little monkey is in the car.... it'll be a bad day, being perfectly blunt. She's so precious to me it feels as if my heart breaks when she's closed the door on her fingers or something and she cries.

On the bike, I ride as if everything is out to get me- stay at (or sometimes find myself just a hair below) the speed limit, watch everything, and don't take chances. Take full advantage of the different spots in the lane I can be in, watch my mirrors, continuously scan... and smile.

I don't know how these bikes can be ridden at 90. at 65 I'm struggling to not get blown off the bike, lol.

I think my tach may be reading wrong, because I definitely don't read 5k @ 55mph.... (it bounces up and down at idle too)

You'd be surprised how much more comfortable a small windshield makes things.  I commute about 20 miles to work 1 way and about 15 of that is interstate at about 80 (usually around 70 on the way there and about85 on the way home).  With a wind shield it's nice and comfortable, but I need to get some hand guards now because it's not gonna be long before things start getting cool.

You can test your tach by unscrewing the cable and using an electric drill to drive it, same with the speedo.

You need to have your carbs balanced. that will clean up your bouncy tach. it did for me anyway...

or jason, you might just have an air leak at the boots-carb,,,or,,,airbox-carb.

with the engine ticking over, sparay carb. cleaner around all 6 joints, any alteration in revs.up or down, indicate a leak.

since doing my rear wheel mod to an 18 inch wheel.i get 60 mph @ 5k rpm, with a passenger, and 28 miles extra per tankfull.........also,when the time is right half price on the tyres

I'm at the age where riding well within my limits makes for a nicer ride by not scaring the crap out of myself.

Where I live we have speed cameras everywhere and 12 demerit points over 3 years is 3 months loss of licence, 30 or more KPH over the limit is immediate 3 months loss of licence, so you have to be careful where you do your test and tuning.

Regarding the CX revving high, I was concerned when I first got my bike, but I soon realized that it wasn't a problem.

In fact I have a CX400 which has high gearing and a 15" rear wheel which does 6000 rpm at 100kph (approx 60mph).

A couple months ago I was driving into New Orleans from the west on I10. This is a long elevated road with no exits per say... I had noticed a few state troopers on the way and saw 2 bikes pulled over... about three miles later traffic came to a halt. After a short delay and arriving at the end of the bridge, I saw the mass arrest of at least 50 sportbikers.... About 15 bikes were being loaded onto a flatbed and the rest were riding escorted toward the troop b by more than a few cop cars... This was shortly after a bunch of video cams were installed...

I like to haul azz occasionally, these elevated portions of interstate were perfect...before video big brother.

now I go out and do my idiot rides during Saints games. No One is watching the security cams, and virtually no one is away from their Tv sets around here...

Mins Man, I have never heard of a CX400, could you mean a CB400 supersport?
