What you're trying to find as an initial diagnostic toll is what's known as the "White wire fix" - it may be in the lonng list of common answers that Stitch has a link to in his signature.
1980 CX500C Ignition Problems
There was once posted on the "Old Forum" a method for checking the CDI ignition sytem which includes the Stator. I had the Method but lost it. My engine quits at 5000 rpm. I suspect stator problems??? Any help?
