Sorry I missed. My youngest son lives 1 block from lake street in a studio apt. We spent Saturday moving him out.
He said it was not that the area was bad, but there is nowhere to go or shop anymore close by. He was close to where he worked, Teen Challenge. He could walk to work. He is pretty bummed. Many other people were moving also. It will take years for that community to recover.
the irony is, our neighborhood is sympathetic to justice for George Floyd. We are actually North of where he was killed. The Cup Grocery neighborhood, where it happend, is pretty much untouched because locals were out and on guard every night..
We sustained most of the vandalism. Neighbors have stood outside of Longfellow Market every night and even chased a person away who was trying to set the building on fire. The persons setting fires are really not a part of the protests.Longfellow Market is our only local grocery untouched.
Many of the businesses are minority owned. You are right, it will take years to rebuild and some businesses already stressed by Covid-19 were done in by this.
I was up until 3AM keeping an eye on the neighborhood. It was quiet, except for the Blackhawks overhead. I did find out that my newest nextdoor neighbor is a Marine Medic veteran and served two tours in Afghanistan. He said to get him if anybody needs help because emergency services are so taxed, not all calls are being answered.
. We are going shooting when when the ranges open. He likes WWII rifles too.
The neighborhood is really getting organizing and getting stronger. Sanford School had a huge response to its emergency food program. They had to open satellite drop off/pick up sites to handle all the response. Getting to know the neighbors and their positive responses are the best thing to come out of all this.
Me and Momo will watch the neighborhood again tonight. If it is quiet, maybe we will get to bed before 3AM.
